If monkeys and humans share a common ancestor, why aren't monkeys equally evolved to humans?

Did you know that there are many species of monkeys? Humans evolved from a species of monkey that is long extinct but its ancestors live on and prospered through evolution. Why are there no cavemen or neanderthals? Weren't they HUMAN? How do you explain that?
