How to know if he ever had feelings for me?

Okay so i have known this guy for a reallllly long time now (since childhood) but we haven't met in a reallly long time (maybe 6 yrs)...the last time we spent time together like friends was when we were 14 and i've always had feelings for him but since i'm the shy type of girl, i could never get myself to tell him (besides we were just kids then and i wasn't so sure if i should tell him about it) but now that i found him on a social networking site, those feelings resurfaced!! but the problem is that our families have been at logger heads for quite sometime now so i'm not sure if he likes/liked me...but he has always been sweet when we used to play together....so i added him but not as me (i know its weird) but i wasn't sure how he'd react if i added him as myself considering the situation of our families...so i was thinking maybe i should add him as someone else and find out about his feelings...but what should i ask him??
